Susan Hancock took up the position of ATIEL Secretary General on 1st July2011. Susan, a UK national, combines a career in engineering and technical operations with significant experience of managing the affairs of leading industry bodies.
She joins ATIEL after 14 years as Chief Executive of the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (FPS), the trade association for the oil distribution industry in the UK and Republic of Ireland.
During this time she was responsible for developing the FPS into a respected industry body, gaining recognition of the oil distribution industry's importance by Government and other official bodies, and developing and expanding the Federation's member services.
Susan started her career in the construction and quarrying industries, becoming a member of the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and achieving Chartered Engineer status.
After a spell working in the Middle East, where she set up a materials testing laboratory, she returned to the UK to take up a position with the British Standards Institution (BSI), with responsibility for running national, European and international standards committees and drafting technical standards.
She then joined the Textile Institute, a UK-based international professional body, becoming responsible for the running of its headquarters, corporate staff and financial affairs for four years, before her move to the FPS.
As part of her role as ATIEL Secretary General, Susan will also head up the association's Communications Working Group, responsible for, among other things, ongoing development of the ATIEL website, promotion of ATIEL activities and production of its key external documents.
Susan succeeds Terry Bates who served as ATIEL Secretary General, in two spells, for nine years.
